The Babylonian Marriage Market is an 1875 painting by the British artist Edwin Long, which depicts a group of young Babylonian women who’s families had not been able to afford a dowry, being lined up according to how good looking they were and being auctioned off into marriage. The image includes several designs based on ancient near eastern artefacts from the British Museum, such as the southern Mesopotamian white carved marble stone which was found in a deposit of the Sumerian king A’annepada (circa 2500 BCE), and prominently serves as the centre piece of the image where the Babylonian wives are displayed above the crowd of interested purchasers. The painting made its public debut at the Royal Academy in 1875 where it drew large crowds and won widespread acclaim for its similarities between its subject matter and modern European marriage practices, which many thought to be mercenary and immoral. Holloway’s reasons for giving this work to Royal Holloway College (a women-only college that he also had founded) are still debated by historians.
