The shakers feature an organic shape reminiscent of a salt sculpture with striking black handwriting by British artist David Shrigley. These shakers were originally commissioned for the Collection Lambert in Avignon in 2000 and specially re-commissioned for David Shrigley’s major solo exhibition at London’s Hayward Gallery in 2012. David Shrigley lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland where he attended Glasgow School of Art. Shrigley works with drawing, animation, photography and sculpture. His work is marked by a bleak humour that below the surface reveals thoughtful truths about the human condition. The works – at times seemingly frustrated or bordering the absurd – comment either Shrigley’s own life or our world in general. Social indignation plays no small part in the creation of the works or in the way that the artist sees his role within society. In addition, Shrigley regularly publishes books with Redstone Press.
