He was later known as Ea in Akkadian and he is one of the three most powerful gods in the Mesopotamian pantheon, along with his father, Anu, and brother, Enlil. The main temple of Enki was called E-abzu (Abzu Temple: the house of the subterranean waters) located near the Persian Gulf at the city of Eridu. It was the first temple known to have been built in Southern Iraq and excavations show evidence of the existence of a shrine dating back to the earliest Ubaid period, more than 6,500 years ago. Enki is often depicted surrounded by a flowing stream of water, holding an overflowing cup, or by various fish symbolism, representing the subterranean waters of the Abzu. His brother, Enlil, attempted to destroy the newly created humans with a devastating flood (the infamous biblical deluge) because the humans were disturbing his sleep. Enki then instructed his most favored human to build an ark so that humanity could escape the destruction, evidently paralleling the more recent biblical tale of’Noah’.
