The Epic of Gilgamesh Cuneiform Tablet V – Poster, Wrapped Canvas, Framed Print. The Epic of Gilgamesh is regarded as the earliest surviving notable literature in history (and the second oldest religious text). Centering around Gilgamesh, the half human-half Anunnaki Demigod who ruled Sumer during the Third Dynasty of Ur ca. 2100 BC in ancient Iraq (Mesopotamia). The epic recounts the adventures of Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu, the shaggy’wildman’ who some attest to being similar to a bigfoot type creature. In Tablet XI of the epic, Gilgamesh meets with a man named Utnapishtim, a survivor of the biblical flood, whom Gilgamesh consults about the secret of immortality. Utnapishtim was the only man to escape death having preserved human and animal life in the great boat he built after receiving instructions from the Anunnaki God, Enki. Many believe this to be the origin of the’Noah’s flood’ tale in the Bible. The tales of the epic exist in Sumerian, Old Babylonian and New Babylonian language versions. The ancient Mesopotamians inscribed epic tales like this in cuneiform script on clay tablets, such as this image (featured) of T. 1147, currently housed in the Sulymaniyah Museum in Northern Iraq. It was recovered from smugglers during the looting of artifacts after the Second Gulf War. This particular piece offers tantalizing new details of the story previously known from Tablet V, with Gilgamesh and Enkidu encountering monkeys, cicadas, and birds in a lush cedar forest. While there, they slay the mighty Humbaba, who is described as being a powerful ruler, ogre or giant.
