Lamassu Winged Bull Wall Art – Poster, Wrapped Canvas, Framed Print. The Lamassu is an Assyrian protective deity depicted as a human-bull hybrid in Assyrian times, with a human head, the body of a bull and wings like a bird. The Lamassu represent the zodiacs, parent-stars or constellations, and was initially represented by a meditating goddess in Sumerian times, specifically being linked to the Anunnaki Goddess, Ishtar, and her holy centre of Uruk. Assyrian sculptures typically placed pairs of lamassu at entrances to palaces facing the street as a means of protection. To protect houses, the Lamassu were engraved in clay tablets which were then buried under the doorways and foundations. They were sculpted in colossal sizes at the entrance of cities, one at each side of the door of the entrance gate, each one looking toward one of the cardinal points. Some have associated the Lamassu as the cherub/cherubin as mentioned in the Bible, where the prophet Ezekiel wrote about a fantastic being made up of aspects of a human being, a lion, an eagle, and a bull. The motif of a winged animal with a human head is common to the Near East, first recorded in Ebla around 3000 BC, and the first distinct lamassu motif appeared in Assyria around 950 BC as a symbol of power.
