The painting is titled “Near The Start 20th July 1792, Devon” and is signed, inscribed, and dated on the verso. Included, taped to the back of the frame is a photocopy of the signature and inscription that can be found on the reverse of the painting itself, seen in picture 6. The piece comes with impeccable provenance from the Abbott & Holder Art Gallery in London, UK. The original gallery label is still affixed to the verso, seen magnified in picture 7. The painting has a hand painted mount that is really unique. The piece retains its original gallery matte and frame, which can be seen magnified in picture 5. The painting is wonderfully executed, and a fine example of Abbott’s favorite subject, Devon. The painting is in exquisite condition with no rips, tears, repairs, staining, foxing, or in-painting. There is no damage whatsoever. The original gallery matte and frame are also in excellent condition with no staining or discoloration to the matte. The gallery frame does not have any major damage, but there are some nicks and scrapes, along with a small chip in the upper left edge, seen in picture 4. This piece is an absolute gem, and is ready for hanging as-is. The frame measures roughly 17.5″ x 15″, with the image measuring roughly 9.75″ x 7″. Please note the pictures may not be as clear as we’d like due to the settings on the camera to reduce the glare. Thank you for checking out our listing. Born and raised in Exeter, Abbott remained in the region throughout his life, working primarily as a surgeon. He received artistic instruction from his friend, watercolorist. Though he is known today for his work with oils, most of Abbott’s images were done in watercolor. Abbott adopted Towne’s techniques of carefully delineating forms with a pen, and demonstrating the effects of light with a series of monochromatic washes. He frequently used this approach when painting scenery from the county of Devon, his subject of choice. This technique also lent itself to printmaking, and the artist’s surviving etchings indicate a firm grasp of this medium. Abbott was given the title of Honorary Exhibitor at the Royal Academy in 1793, and his oil paintings were regularly shown there until 1805. Abbot died around 1851. His works can be found in a number of British museums, including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, both in London.
