A rare English Enamel on Copper Bonbonniere Box. The top is molded and hand painted featuring an Artist Palette and Brushes, Parchment, Calipers, Angle Rule enhanced with floral design. Complementing flowers around the base. The inscription written in French is, JE PEIN DERAI VOS BAUTES. The mottoes were often in misspelt French. The beginning of this translation is I WILL PAINT YOUR? Last one probably means beauty but is not written correctly as my google translate says it means, I will paint your cars? Bright vibrant colors on a white ground. Hinge has a good patina and the box closes good and tight. The top is very three dimensional. Measures approximately, 2 x 1 ½ x 1 ½. This is a very RARE English Enamel Bonbonniere Toy. It is one of a small series of Trophy boxes made in the 1770s. I have pictured three for reference which can be found on page 82 of English Enamel Boxes by Susan Benjamin. Although the forms are the same the skilled painters used a variety of colors as they are not done on a production line. These are technically done in South Staffordshire which produced a large variety of goods. However, the 18th Century English Enamels are typically listed under Battersea for easy identification.
