Sennacherib Son of Sargon II. Wall Art (Palace of King Sargon II) – Poster, Wrapped Canvas, Framed Print. Sennacherib was the king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire from 705 BC, following on from the death of his father, King Sargon II. He is one of the most well known kings from the Assyrian era due to the role he plays in the Hebrew Bible. His name translates to “Sîn (the Anunnaki moon-god) has replaced the brothers” in the Akkadian language, likely deriving from the fact that he was not Sargon’s first son, but all his older brothers were dead by the time he was born. At the time it was illegal to give the name’Sennacherib’ to a commoner as it was considered sacrilege. The discovery of Sennacherib’s own inscriptions in the 19th century shown the world what viscous acts he was capable of performing on his enemies, such as ordering the throats of the Elamites to be slit, and their hands and lips to be cut off. Sennacherib believed all of the Anunnaki gods in the kingdom favored him; Ashur, father of the gods, looked steadfastly upon me among all the rulers and he made my weapons greater than those of all who sit on royal daises. The god Ninshiku gave me wide understanding equal to that of the sage Adapu (Winged Genie/Apkallu) and endowed me with broad knowledge. The featured image of Sennacherib is an extract from a low relief carving excavated from the Palace of King Sargon II.
