He joined the local literary club where he met artist Charles Haworth, who became his mentor, and gave him further instruction in working in black and white. After his drawings of a railway accident at Blackburn station (1881) were published in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, Railton went on to become one of the leading illustrators of his day. He moved to London and married Frances, another illustrator – they had one child, Ione, who also became an illustrator. The English Illustrated Magazine was a monthly magazine published in the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. As the name implies, it was illustrated, and many of the popular illustrators of the day contributing to various issues. The articles were both fiction – sometimes serialized, and non-fiction, plus poetry and ballads. Again many of authors were the top writers of the day, and the magazine was often offered the first publication of some texts. Staircase at Stanley Place, by Herbert Railton, engraved by J D Cooper, page 746. In Watergate Street also is the celebrated Stanley Palace, where Lord Derby, who was concerned in the rising to restore the worthless representative of the Stuarts in 1655, spent his last night before he was taken to Bolton for execution. There is some beautiful work about the front, but it is unhappily falling into decay for want of due care. The staircase of the Stanley Palace is very unequal to the exterior, and one almost wonders to see it in connection with such a? Ne piece of architecture, but the whole house, of which only a portion can be left, is completely denuded of every kind of enrichment, as though it had been left open to plunder after the execution of the adventurous Earl. His journey to Bolton and his leave-takings of his family are full of painful interest. There are many incidents of it recorded in Chester that, are not generally published, and one only regrets and wonders that so noble a man should have suffered himself to be so very far misled.
