In the ancient language of Sumerian, Lugal translates to “Ruler” or “King” who was typically a young man who came from a rich land owning family. The term Lugal extends to Ancient Egypt where it was used to address Kings and Pharaohs both directly and through letters. The functions of a Lugal would include ceremonial activities, border disputes, military operations and once the Lugal had died, it was the duty of his son to take his place. The Statue of Lugal-Dalu (featured) was discovered within the ancient city of Adab (or Udab in Sumerian), between Telloh and Nippur (modern day Bismaya, Iraq, 6.2 miles South East of Baghdad) and is a limestone carving which dates between 3000 – 2000 BC. The inscription on his shoulder introduces him as “The King of Adab” and is said to be devoted to the Temple E-Shar, a divine property of the Anunnaki Goddess Ishtar/Inanna. The statue is one of a’Deputy Priest’ who continued to express gratitude to Ishtar/Inanna, even when she was not visiting the temple.
