Many of you may know me as the artist behind Rainbabies Nursey, turning Vinyl dolls and kits into realistic babies. One of my hobbies has been restoring Chad Valley Bambina felt velveteen dolls and Dean’s Rag book dolls. When I see an extreme poor TLC dolly usually filthy from years of grime, sometimes with old repairs to body, broken or no eyes or sparse ratty hair, I just can’t help myself from wanting to bring them back to their timeless beauty. I usually try and keep their originality but some are just beyond that and need a complete make over. This beautiful large Chad Valley Bambina has been treated to a Rainbabies spa. Her face was well… Something only fit for Halloween as you can see in the last picture. The glass eyes had been poked in, one eye was broken at the side, the face drawn on with bright blue felt tip pens. She had lost a foot which had been lovingly replaced in a similar velveteen fabric a very long time ago. The other foot had also been repaired across the top join. As the repairs add to her authenticity of a well loved little dolly seem quite secure and do not detract from her over all look they are still there. Her sewn on mohair had been cut very badly and was very sparse and dirty not covering the full head. She really needed a Rainbabies make over. I freeze treated her in case of any moth. Being a cloth doll, gently surface cleaned her velvet and removed her sparse wig and dry cleaned it. I re-felted her head, cleaned and re-inserted the glass eyes to give her a cute side glance look which also hides the broken glass edge on one eye. Only a tiny nibble is visible if looked at very close up see pic 8. I then delicately painted her face to give her a more realistic child look. There was not much of the original titan red mohair so after cleaning and gently pin combing through, I sewed the weft back on in a bob style that suited the 1920s 30s doll and made a grey and red vintage felt cloche hat sewn on to cover the rest. She is wearing a stunning Art Deco style grey wool hand knitted dress with unusual hem lines with matching jacket that has vintage red buttons and white faux fur collar. The dress has red felt straps that cross over at the back and vintage red button fastener. Her grey felt boots were hand sewn with a red felt rose trim silver thread faux ties, they cover the repaired feet perfectly. Considering she was really so far gone I hope you will agree that she now looks the beautiful little lady that she deserves and my tribute to the Chad Valley Bambina. She is no longer a play doll she is a one of a kind artist remodelled doll for serious doll collector display only.
