The Lion Hunt of Ashurbanipal – Poster, Wrapped Canvas, Framed Print. In ancient Assyria, Lion Hunting was a sport reserved for Kings. Symbolic of the Rulers power and duty to protect and fight for his people, the palace reliefs are considered as the supreme masterpieces of Assyrian art. Created around 645 – 635 BC, the sculpted reliefs were displayed with pride throughout Ashurbanipal’s palace at Nineveh (outskirts of Mosul, modern day Northern Iraq). Lions were possibly even raised in captivity for the sole purpose of sport killing as several reliefs indicate the lions being released from cages in an arena, rather than being hunted in the wild. Ashurbanipal is famous for his impressive collection of cuneiform clay tablets discovered in 1849 at his Royal Library of Nineveh in which we owe the majority of our knowledge to this time period to. Amongst the 30,000 clay tablets were writings on medicine, astronomy, literature, prayers, incantations and hymns to their Anunnaki Gods and Goddesses and perhaps most importantly, the original Enuma Elish creation story and the story of how Anunnaki Engineer, Enki, created the first human; Adamu/Adapa.
