1870 antique 12 x 19 oil on canvas laid on board depicting the White Mountains of New Hampshire in autumn with cows watering by the river. This painting has me stumped all of a sudden. Ive owned it for 20 years and always thought it was an unsigned Benjamin Champney. I went to research it today and found that AT Bricher was associated with doing this exact scene too, and really early on in 1866. See pic #2, and look closely. In a way this makes sense since Im 20 minutes from Philly and thats where Herzog lived. I just cant wrap my head around it – were these guys copying each other or something? I know they all painted in the Hudson River School mode and all of them were active in New England. Maybe the signature on this painting isnt right. Or, maybe it is, and all the artists were standing around together having a painting party in NH. This is going to be a tricky painting to get gallery ready. Its laid on masonite and there are a lot of bubbling areas where the canvas is lifting off the board. Obviously it looks fine in the pictures laying flat in the shade on my porch, but trust me, it has noticeable problems in-person. I dont know if its wax, white glue, hide skin glue, or what under there. If may pry off, it may flatten out with a run on the heat table, maybe itll need BEVA injecting with syringes, or at worst it could need scalpel slits and subsequent inpainting done. Id value this painting at far more than my asking price if it werent for its needing restoration work done. The quality is better than just good, its not tiny, and above all else, the red and yellow colors place this notches above any brown sauce dark painting or green landscape from the period. This is a genuine period piece and you couldnt hope for a better look. This type of painting is getting harder and harder to find. I found a comp supposedly by Champney (the exact same scene and unsigned recto) at around 3K and it had a lot of damage w/ serious losses. It was a project piece like this one.
