This is an intriguing painting on a number of levels. It’s a peaceful romantic composition, a traditional rugged landscape with vernacular wooden buildings and men fishing. Using predominantly earth tone colors such as umber and ocher, and incorporating calligraphy inscriptions. The design on the fisherman’s cottage (particularly the triangular vent in the gable) is Japanese. This is painted on linen,’sized’ in the traditional way with gesso (made of animal skin glue and chalk) painted back and front and then warmed with a wash of tea stain to give it an aged look before starting the painting. The black calligraphy at the top right tells us the title of the painting (the four larger characters on the right) the date and the artist, with the artist’s name repeated in the red rakkan seal. The title reads (right to left in the traditional way) which translates as “Autumn River Angling” (fishing). The two characters at the top of the next column mean 1973, the year when it was painted. To the left of that is the artist’s name, which translates in Japanese as Tenma. This beautiful painting by the artist Tenma is an original, one-of-a-kind work of art.
