Irish landscape painter in watercolours and oils. Claude Hayes born in Dublin the son of the artist Edwin Hayes. He ran away to sea, serving on The Golden Fleece, one of the transports used in the Abyssinian Expedition of 1867 to 1868. Having spent a year in America, he came to England and studied art at Heatherleys School, then for three years at the Royal Academy Schools, he also studied in Antwerp under Verlat. Hayes exhibited extensively, from 1876 at the Royal Academy, but also showing work at all of the principal London and provincial galleries of the day. He first practiced as a portrait painter in oils, but soon abandoned portraiture for landscapes, first in oil and then in watercolours, which became his favoured medium. In 1883 he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). In 1884 he first exhibited at the Royal Institute for Painters in Watercolour (RI), of which he was elected a member in 1886, showing over 200 works at the RI over his lifetime. He was also an elected member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society from 1902 to 1907. In 1912, Claude Hayes represented England at the Venice Biennale. His work is in various public collections in England and Ireland including the Ulster Museum, Museums Sheffield and the Leeds City Art Gallery. He lived and worked in Hampshire, meeting James Aumonier, and in Surrey with William Charles Estall whose sister he married. He was influenced by Cox and Thomas Collier. Maintaining worthily and without imitation their breezy open-air style, he had the power of following broken ground into receding distance with able indication of form and colour values. His transparent use of fresh and untroubled colour allowed the sparkle of white paper to play its part in the general scheme. He has never quite received the recognition which he deserves. White Moor adjoins Bolton’s Bench, to the east of Lyndhurst, in the New Forest, Hampshire. One of a number of New Forest heaths of the same name, White Moors are reputedly on sandy soils, whilst Black Down and Black Knowl names are said to refer to sites on heavier, darker soils. Old maps tell of the Moor’s history. Richardson, King and Driver’s late-18th / early 19th century map shows a pattern of tracks that include one labelled as a Bridle way from Beaulieu to Minstead, and another named as the Salt Way, a salt carriers’ route from coastal salterns to markets inland. The 1871 Ordnance Survey map offers a little more information, and highlights one of White Moor’s military associations – a Volunteers’ Rifle Range which is also shown on the 1898 Ordnance Survey map, complete with Markers’ Hut, Flagstaff and Target, but not on the 1909 Ordnance Survey map. The range pre-dates 1871, however, for a watercolour showing it in use, painted by Sir Charles Burrard in 1861, is held in the Christopher Tower Reference Library, Lyndhurst. After a short respite, White Moor was once again used extensively by the military during the First World War. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”.
